KAFO/HKAFO Orthometry

Like custom AFOs, KAFOs are individually made based on precise measurements and molds, ensuring optimal fit and function. This customization addresses individual anatomical variations and specific clinical needs.

KAFOs are typically constructed from thermoplastics, metal/leather, or composite materials, chosen for their strength and durability. Padding and liners are used for comfort and to prevent skin breakdown. At Trinity, we can design most devices with any of the above materials.

Custom KAFOs are commonly prescribed for individuals with:

Significant Knee Instability:

  • Ligamentous injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) resulting in severe instability.

  • Quadriceps weakness or paralysis.

  • Genu recurvatum (hyperextension of the knee).

Neuromuscular Disorders:

  • Polio.

  • Muscular dystrophy.

  • Spina bifida.

  • Cerebral palsy, when knee control is also needed.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation:

  • Following complex knee surgeries.

  • To protect and stabilize the knee during healing.

Post-Traumatic Injuries:

  • Fractures involving the knee, tibia, or femur.

  • Severe combined injuries to the lower extremity.

Conditions Requiring Multi-Joint Control:

  • When both knee and ankle stability are compromised.
